Conrad Vanderleest is a 2nd grade student in Mrs. Voshel’s classroom. As some are aware, Conrad is in his 3rd year of battling leukemia. His illness causes him to miss a lot of school and sometimes he even has to be hospitalized. Any time a student has to miss school for extended periods, it affects their learning. Technology, however, can help to bridge the gap and assist a student in keeping up with their studies.
This year the Newaygo JR Lions PTO collected donations at the school carnival to purchase Conrad an iPad Mini. Recently, Conrad was admitted to the hospital. He has been able to use educational iPad apps that Mrs. Voshel uses in the classroom to do some school work. Additionally, because of the classroom technology present at NPS, Conrad was able to Face Time with his entire class from the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Not only did Conrad and his classmates interact through Face Time, Conrad recently challenged his classmates to a spelling game all while being in the hospital! What a great example of our technology in action as well as providing a powerful learning experience for all of the students. We very much appreciate the support of our community to help make these things possible.
