Students Work on Rain Garden at Velma Matson Upper Elementary

rain garden 2013 VMUE

The main components of a rain garden – over 300 native wildflowers and a lot of mulch have been installed at Velma Matson Upper Elem.  The bowl shaped garden is designed to prevent water from the rooftop from entering the storm drains which lead into the Muskegon River thus preventing pollutants from entering the water.

This project, under the direction of Ms. Julie Berwald, 3rd grade teacher, was made possible with a grant from the Muskegon River Watershed Association and The Fremont Area Community Foundation.  Additionally, a walking tour will be designed with QR Voice Code labels for each of the different species so our students can tour and learn more about the garden using technology  Teachers and students have learned a lot from this program.
